Cookbox and Shroud The cookbox houses the components of the cooking system: cooking grates, burner tubes, Favorizer Bars, and the grease management system. 5 Decisive factors in choosing a gas barbecue
1. Cooking surface
The first factor to consider when considering the purchase of a gas barbecue is related to the characteristics of the cooking surface that the appliance has because these are indicative of the amount and type of food that can be grilled, but also of any additional cooking methods.
In the following list, we analyze in detail the elements that need to be evaluated to choose a device in line with your needs and expectations of use.
Size of the surface: this is the element that makes the most difference, and that makes a barbecue suitable to grill only a couple of burgers now and then or, instead, to prepare large barbecues with friends and family. You will then have to ask yourself how much food you want to grill at once, so you can choose the model that best suits your needs. To give you an idea of the proportions, know that on the market you can find gas barbecues with a minimum cooking surface that houses less than ten burgers, appliances with an average surface for the preparation of about 18 burgers at a time and, finally, barbecue with a cover of about 28 burgers in a single session
Side cooker: Some barbecues include a side cooker, handy for cooking or even just heating side dishes, sauces or other types of food while preparing meat on the grill so that you can serve food at the same time
Grill quality: a long bracket should be opened on the grid since its quality is the element that most differentiates a high-performance gas barbecue and another somewhat poorer. It must be said that there are two types of gas barbecues, that are those built, that go to create a real kitchen but outdoors, and are fed by the domestic gas network, and those that are transportable, in the shape that resembles that of a trolley, and that are supplied by a gas cylinder that lays inside the structure of the appliance itself. Here we deal with these mobile models, which can be of different sizes and fabrics and therefore to adapt to varying types of use and different spaces available to the user.
Let’s see in detail what and how many types of measures exist for a gas barbecue and how you have to choose the most suitable for yourself, both for the clutter that these entail and for the amount of food they can cook.
Portable barbecues: these are the smallest and most manageable models, designed for occasional barbecues in the open air and not necessarily in the backyard since they can also be transported to other places. Their structure does not always include a transport trolley with wheels but is instead designed to be laid on a surface, like an outdoor table;
Small barbecues: Although they are defined as low, these barbecues are not transportable and are therefore used in their garden or patio. They are the ideal solution for those who want to spend little and buy a compact and unwieldy model, suitable for small households or for those who have no problem grilling food in several takes. Smaller barbecues can have a wooden or metal cart and almost always include only two small transport wheels;
Average barbecues: in this group we find the most popular gas barbecues on the market and required since they are located precisely halfway between small and very abundant models, responding to most of the most common user needs. We are faced with models that are characterized by a transport trolley that sometimes has two wheels and other times four and that provides a cooking surface almost double that of small models. These gas barbecues are not transportable but are used in the garden or on the terrace of your home
Large barbecues: this category includes the bulkiest and large gas barbecues that exist on the market, which, among other things, also correspond to the most expensive and sophisticated models, which often offer additional cooking functions and other extras that we will deal with in the coming paragraphs. These appliances are not transportable outside their patio or garden and almost always have four sturdy and reliable wheels, able to move their substantial structure
Relatively, however, the convenience of using and transporting a gas barbecue will have to pay attention to the number of wheels that this is equipped with: the four-wheeled models are much more manageable, even if they are huge and heavy, while those with two wheels make the transport less smooth and are probably not the ideal choice for those who have to move their device with a specific frequency, mainly if a significant amount characterizes this.
Finally, there are other secondary structural aspects, such as the presence of support shelves or object compartments, which will be addressed in the next paragraph, dedicated to the practicality of using the gas barbecue.
Type of cylinder
An interesting aspect related to the structural characteristics of gas barbecues is the type of gas with which the various models are compatible. It is also necessary to remember that some products may be powered by both the cylinder and the domestic methane. When we talk about barbecues powered by cylinder we refer to products that take advantage of LPGgas: it is an artform gas composed of a mixture of butane and propane. Its main features are the high heating power and ease of transport, as changing pressure and temperature you can quickly bring the gas to the liquid state. Methane, on the other hand, is the gas that passes into the domestic plant. It is only found in the performing state and, although it has less heating power, it is safer and cheaper. When we talk about gas barbecues powered by the cylinder then we talk about LPGgas; Methane-powered products are much rarer and must have an attack to be connected to the home network. Models with dual power are more frequent.
3. Practical use
Proceeding with the factors to be evaluated in the purchase of a gas barbecue, we are faced with that related to its practicality. In addition to the aspects of cooking itself, it is also essential to assess how easily the appliance can be used and cleaned, especially if you want to make it a frequent use. Below is a list of all the elements that increase the practicality of using a gas barbecue:
Hooks and compartments: you can find a series of hooks in the structure of your barbecue to hang towels or utensils, or very comfortable compartments to store items that can be served during cooking, such as spices and various toppings. The cheapest models don’t always include this option, while high-priced models include convenient and sophisticated solutions to store different types of accessories
Support plans: the presence of one or more shelves are beneficial to place dishes, food to cook, utensils or anything else you may need when using your barbecue. Depending on the price and sophistication of the appliance, we will find massive, stainless steel shelves or, on the contrary, very small and in other materials less robust and less easy to keep clean
Illuminated controls and internal lights: these are two handy features for those who want to grill even in the evening and in low light conditions. The presence of backlit controls with LED lights allows you to see well the settings you are selecting for cooking. The most sophisticated models, on the other hand, also have real lights mounted inside the structure to illuminate the cooking surface
Ease of cleaning: in addition to the material of which the barbecue is made, it is the presence of some small tricks that make washing the appliance much more comfortable. This is the case, for example, of pull-out drawers that collect all the fat produced during cooking there and other possible food residues
4. Functions
There are some functions that, when present, affect the ease and convenience of use of the device, as well as its versatility in terms of available culinary preparations.
The possibility of taking advantage of these functions makes a product more complete and sophisticated (as well as more expensive) but, sometimes, the presence of them is fundamental: think, for example, of those who want a model with the possibility of being used as a roaster, or those who need to maintain a specific temperature during the cooking of certain foods.
We can divide the functions into two categories, of which the first includes all those that relate to the actual operation of the gas barbecue, and are the following:
Double use methane and LPG: although non-recessed gas barbecues always provide for service via cylinder, some are prepared even for the attack to convert to the use of methane directly from the home network
Adjustable temperature and thermometer: not always a barbecue should be used at maximum power but, indeed, for some foods such as fish or thick meats, you need to be able to select the temperature accurately. Some models also include a thermometer that shows precisely the degree of heat reached
Indicator of the state of the cylinder: indicates how much propane is still left in the tank, very useful not to stay “dry” in the middle of a barbecue with friends
Electric lighter: the lighter is the key that is used to ignite the flame, which can be both electronic (much more straightforward and reliable since it immediately turns on and does not produce sparks) and ignition by swivel wheel or button
In the second category of functions, on the other hand, we find those related to particular cooking systems and storage of foods:
Roasted: the complete models also provide the roasting cooking function. Some have only a predisposition to fit the skewer accessory, while others include it already supplied
Fryer: you can find models that include a frying compartment located sideways at the cooking plate, often as a replacement for the presence of the stove
Toaster: some models include a chamber to lay the slices of toast bread (activities that are still possible even just by resting the slices of food on the grills)

It should be noted that, except for any tank or appliance and spit cover that are included more often, many other accessories are available to buy separately and only costly models have a right amount of extra components.
However, you can take into account how wide the range of accessories that can be purchased separately that a model provides, as they expand its culinary possibilities. For example, some of these are wok, the attachment for baking ribs or pizza and cakes.
There are also real robots for some brands that clean the grills and plates of the device themselves.

Are materials important?
There are several materials used for a gas barbecue that need to be carefully evaluated, as some of them will come into contact with the foods to be cooked. The wooden models, for example, are certainly lighter and more manageable than steel models. The materials that make up the outside of the gas barbecue cooking area are also worth considering: some models are entirely steel, while others only include inserts in that alloy and, although cheaper, have less resistance to shocks, scratches and external agents.
