How to choose

How to choose the gas barbecue

We have seen which are the best gas barbecues currently on the market, let’s now delve into how to choose from all the ones that best suit your needs. The elements to consider are numerous; the first is the structure of the barbecue, which can be small, medium or large, transportable or fixed.

Also essential is the hob, on which the performance of the barbecue depends, and which can have two or more fires, of different powers. Don’t also forget to evaluate the type of gas used, which can be Butano, LPG or Methane. You should know, then, that some barbecues have numerous functions and accessories, that improve their performance and that can be decisive in the choice.

Of course, make sure that the barbecue is practical and easy to use, that it is made from quality materials and has good value for money. To be safe, choose a well-known and industry-specific brand. Let’s see everything in detail.

Structure and size

The first element to evaluate is the structure of the barbecue, which must be chosen according to the use you intend to make it, where you want to place it and the number of people you need to cook for. We have two main types of gas barbecues:

  • equipped with a trolley with wheels that make it easy to move around. They work with gas cylinder and can then be easily moved from one point to another in the garden or terrace, depending on the needs of the moment;
  • to be mounted stably in a place in the garden, like a real kitchen, but outdoors. They attach to the national gas grid, with considerable savings.

It is also essential to take into account the size. According to the measurements, we distinguish four types of barbecues:

  • large, with a large structure, a large hob with multiple fires and new stoves, side support planes and storage containers to arrange the tools. Due to the size, they are not transportable, but if they work with the cylinder and have sturdy wheels, they can be moved into the garden as needed;
  • averages, the most popular on the market, equipped with a cart with wheels on which rests the hob, which usually has 2-3 fires. They are suitable for cooking for 3-5 people. Even these models are not transportable, but if they have wheels and cylinder can be moved;
  • small ones, suitable for low households, or for those who have little space to place the barbecue (for example, a small courtyard or balcony). They usually have a cart with a couple of wheels and a small hob, with two fires;
  • laptops, the most modest and most manageable ever, designed for off-door barbecues and camping holidays. They usually do not have a cart, but a structure to lean on a floor, like an outdoor table.

Hob

Another critical element in the choice of barbecue is the hob. In particular, you must take into account:

  • size of the cooking surface, on which depends the amount of food that can be grilled in a single session. If you plan to use a barbecue to grill friends and need to cook meat for more than six people, we recommend choosing one large, with four or more fires and maybe an extra side cooker. If, on the other hand, you need to grill some burgers for your family or if it is not a problem for you to cook in several sessions, you can also opt for a small or medium barbecue, with two or three fires;
  • side stoves, usually found in medium and large barbecues, useful for frying, cooking or merely heating sauces and side dishes, while the meat cooks on the grill;
  • type of grid, which can be cast iron or stainless steel. The cast-iron restaurants have the merit of retaining the heat for a long time and thus cooking the meat entirely. Unfortunately, they are challenging to clean and more delicate than steel ones. The stainless steel grills are very durable, easy to clean and don’t require much maintenance. However, they retain less heat than cast-iron heat and are more expensive;
    – sub-grid, not always present. It is a smaller grid than the main one, which remains raised and allows you to cook delicate foods, which should not be put in direct contact with the intense heat;
  • plate, handy for cooking soft foods, such as cheese, or small that could fall between the bars of the grid.

Type of gas

Barbecues also differ in the type of gas they use. Some grills, usually all non-recessed ones, work with the cylinder and therefore take advantage of the LPG gas, an aeriform mixture of Butano and Propane. The advantage of this type of barbecue is transportability: they should not be connected to the electricity or gas grid and therefore can be moved smoothly.

Other barbecues operate with methane gas and must be connected to the domestic gas plant. They are not transportable, but they have the advantage of being cheaper than LPG ones, given the lower cost of methane.

Extra features and accessories

Some barbecues have extra features that, while not essential, make them more practical and comprehensive (but also more expensive). The most useful are:

  • dual operation with cylinder and CNG. Some barbecues have a special attack that allows you to use them with both GPL cylinder and the home gas network;
  • electronic lighter that is, a button that immediately ignites the flame, without producing dangerous sparks;
  • adjustable temperature and thermometer. The best barbecues give the possibility to adjust the intensity of the fires and to keep the temperature under control thanks to a thermostat, usually placed on the lid;
  • indicator of the status of the cylinder, which signals when the bottle is about to run out and needs to be replaced.

As for the accessories, the most popular are:

  • roasted, useful for cooking on a spit. Some barbecues with roaster are complete; others have only the predisposition to mount the spit;
  • toaster compartment, to bake the slices of bread without burning them;
  • fryer, to prepare fry while the meat cooks on the grill. It is usually positioned sideways, in place of the most widespread stove;
  • refrigerator/freezer compartment, present only in the most expensive models, handy for storing meat;
  • lava stone, to cook meat and other foods, such as pizza, without adding fat and toppings.

Practicality

The convenience of use is a significant factor in the choice of barbecue, which must be easy to use and clean. The elements that should never be missing are:

  • side support planes, useful for supporting the food to be cooked, the dishes and tools to have at hand during cooking;
  • hooks and compartments containers, to arrange utensils, towels, toppings and everything you need for a perfect grilling;
  • lights on the hob and backlit controls, so you can easily use the barbecue even in the evening and when natural light is scarce;
  • trays to collect cooking fat and other systems to facilitate the cleaning of the grill.

Materials

Pay close attention to the choice of materials, if you want a barbecue that lasts over time. The best content, both for the hob and for the structure of the grill, stainless steel, which resists high temperatures and weather, without rusting or deforming.

Other materials used for the structure are painted aluminium and wood. The first with weather and weather can flay and rust, so avoid it if you can’t put the barbecue in place sheltered from water and wind after use.

The wood is aesthetically gorgeous, but it is the most delicate material ever. Even when treated, with intensive use and exposure to the elements, it tends to spoil quickly. Choose it, then, only if you can keep the barbecue safe and if you plan not to use it very often.

As for the hob and grill, as we anticipated the best material is stainless steel but also cast iron, and natural stone is excellent.

Brand and price

Finally, the brand and price of the barbecue must be taken into account. The best brands specializing in the production of gas barbecues are Campingaz and Weber, but also the cheapest Sochef.

As for the price, it’s hard to find a good gas barbecue below 100 USD. For an excellent medium-sized barbecue, you need to spend at least 200-250 USD. If you want a large and super accessorized model, be prepared to pay more than 400 USD.

TIP to use

But why choose a Gas Barbecue

This kind of BBQ, as explained in the guide to choosing a past article, has some basic features:

The pros

  • Ease of use: In two seconds you start cooking, if you know how to use the stove, you will know how to use a gas barbecue
  • Easy cleaning: Among the various barbecues the gas grill is the easiest to clean
  • Cheap gas: Choose the size of the cylinder according to your needs, and you will spend very little on gas
  • Of all sizes: The only limit is your wallet, there are professional models such as laptops for home
  • Smokes and smells: A gas barbecue won’t make fumes annoying, making it perfect for the balcony

The cons

  • Costs: Hardly choosing anything under 100-150 euros will be worth it.
  • Transportation: In general they are structures not easy to transport for an out-of-door trip, between grille, pipes, gas cylinder
  • Gas availability: If you run out of gas you won’t always have a gas dealer nearby or who is refilling the cylinders
  • Maintenance and safety: With gas, you do not mess around, and it is still essential to have the gas cylinder under control, just like the stoves
